SIX Steps to Save A Drowning Victim

8:52 AM

"Mati lemas boleh diselamatkan.
=> Angkat dan pikul bidak itu arah terbalik macam gambar ini dan lari sampai budak itu muntah air dan menangis. (Lari lebih kurang belasan minit). Budak yang mati lemas 40 minit masih ada peluang boleh diselamatkan. Sila share agar lebih banyak nyawa boleh diselamatkan. Terima kasih,"

Jaw drops in disbelief

PLEASE. Whatever you do, DO NOT SHARE THIS! Kalau anda sayang nyawa orang yang disayangi dan diri anda sendiri, JANGAN BUAT MACAM INI!

It's quite unfortunate that I can't read those Chinese characters. However reading the BM translation gives me the shivers. I would not like anyone who truly believe this trending 'tip' to be any where near me or any one of my relatives.

Seriously? Run with a victim hanging upside down for up to 10 to 20 minutes will cause return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)?!

Let us first get this straight;

'Draining' fluids from the lungs via gravity DOES NOT help in any way. STOP WATCHING TOO MUCH TV! In FOUR minutes, the victim would have suffered IRREVERSIBLE BRAIN DAMAGE.

Now, MAKE THIS VIRAL for a change. Here's what you SHOULD do in the event you encounter such incident.

Just remember;

D - R - S - A - B - C.....easy right? Doctors Ay Bee See. Boleh ingat ke mengkome semua?!

1. D for DANGER

Whatever you do, make sure you are safe and not in immediate danger. You can't do much if you rush in to help the victim only to expose yourself to any danger. If you can't swim, don't get in the water.
Once you are safe, get the victim in a safe environment. Get the victim out of the water on flat, stable ground.

Establish that the victim is unresponsive. The usual script is " Sir, are you OK?". But in the real environment, just do anything you can to wake the patient up. Do this quickly, the longer it takes to start CPR, the less chance for the victim to survive.

3. S for SHOUT

Shout for HELP. You can't manage this alone. Get someone to call the life guard or the emergency services. Ask if anyone else knows CPR. Even if the victim survives, he or she would still need to be evaluated and monitored at the nearest hospital.

4. A for AIRWAY

Open up the airway and observe for any foreign body, if visible, try and remove it. If it's too deep, DO NOT ATTEMPT to remove the foreign body. Head-tilt, chin lift will help prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway.

Is there spontaneous breathing? Look for any chest rise, listen and feel for any breath. Don't take too long.

No need to check pulse, just proceed with chest compression. Find the center of the chest, use TWO hands to provide chest compression. Keep your elbows straight. Make it HARD and FAST.

2 inches deep - at least 100 times per minute - allow full recoil.

THIRTY compressions, followed by TWO breaths.

Geli to give breaths through the mouth? It's OK, just continue with the compression.

If it gets too tiring, get another person to replace you. Remember, you need QUALITY chest compressions to ensure better chances of survival for the victim.

Do this until help arrives. If an Automated External Defbrillator (AED) around, do get one as soon as possible and follow the steps given.

This guide is NOT COMPLETE though. This is only a part of BASIC LIFE SUPPORT. Nothing can replace a proper, guided course in BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS). I suggest, EVERYONE with a conscience to be able to help those around them to attend courses on BLS. There are NGOs actively involved in educating the public on the importance of BLS, do give them a call.

I am willing to cooperate with any parties to educate the public on the importance of Basic Life Support. Do contact me or drop a comment.

Knowing Basic Life Support can SAVE LIVES.
