Keep Calm and Be A NURSE

8:55 AM

Lately, I have seen quite a number of people making very disrespectful remarks towards nurses.

  • Nurses are only made of those who didn't score well in SPM - Pro XXXXXX
  • Nurses have nothing better to do than looking at men's genitals - The Good Son
  • Nurses are just kuli and deserve no respect - Pro Selfie Guy

Some of these guys clearly have NO manners. They have never heard of MANNERS MAKETH MAN. Clearly not gentleman material.

I'm not really sure what made these people make these disparaging remarks about nurses. Ask any doctors and most, if not all will tell you that nurses have a special place in our hearts. Yes, there are times when doctors and nurses will quarrel which other. But its more like adik beradik bergaduh.

Imagine a hospital without any nurses. Do you think the hospital will be able to run? Do you think the patients will survive the night? Who will alert the doctors if a patient collapses? Nak harapkan doktor run the whole hospital? Just two doctors in a district hospital. You think can or not?!

If you want to respect people based on how much money or their education level, clearly you have your priorities wrong. Come on lah, a person can be a billionaire in an instant with something called DONATIONS! Respect is gained from someone's action. Someone's sacrifice to the community. The nurses do get paid to work, but not many would want to be in their shoes. The husbands (or wives) and children of nurses have to make sacrifices as well. Working in shifts can be devastating to family life. Weekends are cut short because they have to work night shifts. Their kids can't get a kiss goodnight or a few minutes of story time before they go to sleep. When they are at home, they can be too tired to do anything.

They go to work having to wash the feces of other people's parents. Have to feed other people's relatives. Have to attend to other people's husbands. At the same time, they face nasty criticism from relatives of patients who got mad because the nurse was late in changing their parent's diapers.

"Ini kerja awak! Jangan malas sangat!" Even though they have nothing else to do other than talk among themselves. Isn't better for them to change the diapers themselves? Mana pergi nya jaga aurat ibu bapa?

To all nurses out there sabar. Masih ada yang cinta. In this line of work, things can get tough. Reading comments like this can create a huge dent in your confidence and motivation. You will question yourself "Why am I doing this?". Look deep into your heart and your will find the answer. You do this to make a change in other people's lives. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a patient recover well and get to go home healthy. That patient's recovery can only be possible with your nursing care.

Keep calm and be a nurse...

  1. It's sad that even this article talks focuses on cleaning patients faeces as representative of their job. Nurses job is so so much more than that. Who makes sure the ventilator that keeps the ICU patient alive is working properly? Who makes sure new born infants are doing well. Who makes sure the post operative patient doesn't develop complications? Who makes sure infection control protocols in the operating theatre arts strictly adhered to etc etc.
Nursing increasingly requires specialist education to keep up with the changes in healthcare. The number of degree and master trained nurses is increasing. Sadly nurses are not well recognized locally and many leave for greener pastures abroad!

    1. I agree with you and I apologize for the rather stereotypical approach of my entry. Nurses' job these days is more than JUST nursing. Their scope of work goes beyond that. The input of nurses in formulating good medical practices are immense. The job they do in the are of primary health should be commended as well. These are the jobscope that the public rarely get to appreciate.
      Thank you Nurina

  3. I am a male, and I ordered lab coats for women, which were meant for women. I really don't know the difference between men and women's clothing but so far nobody has laughed at me so I think I'm set!
