The Cost of Treatment

I haven't been to the pharmacy yet and I can't really verify this case. But I wouldn't be surprised if it is true. The people who go to these "magical" centers aren't really well off. They live tens of kilometers from town. Some of these makciks and pakciks live alone and had to take buses to the nearest town. They are gullible and naive. They can be easily swayed by:
"Ubat barat ni yahudi jahanam yang buat untuk bunuh orang kita. Pakcik minum la ajaib ni. Harga berpatutan (SEMBILAN PULUH HINGGGIIIT!!!!), kalau pakcik tak dapat bayar sekarang, pakcik bayar ansuran"
Yes, some of these modern medications have side effects. But its benefits outweigh the risks. If you want to eat some tree bark, please do so. But don't take the tablet, marketed forms. You just never know what they added. Most common additives are steroids, which WILL make you feel well instantly but with fatal consequences once not tapered off properly. In fact there are studies about buah petunjuk langit (Sky fruit) and misai kucing which does look promising. I tried the petunjuk langit once. It tasted HORRIBLE. My tongue went numb the whole day. Try la makan macam makan nasi, gerenti tak kene kencing manis!

In Malaysia, people are obsessed with CURE of a disease rather than CONTROL and PREVENTION. Diabetes and hypertension are both non communicable disease. It is preventable. In fact, maybe the santan in our nasi lemak, minyak sapi in our roti canai, and condensed milk in our teh tarik is the work of Americans trying to invade Malaysia!
"Ini semua salah kedai mamak yang bukak 24 jam. Sebab tu saya dapat kencing manis!"
The thing is, the cost of healthcare in Malaysia is RM1...SATU RINGGIT MALAYSIA SAHAJA. For that amount you can get a consultation, do a dextrostix test and medications. If you require a specialist consultation, it is RM 5. And in my case, I literally go to the patient's doorstep. I see patients at the nearest community area near their house as part of a mobile clinic initiative. The government spent so much on medical subsidies. But why still go for a RM 90 magic water? Might as well add a magic carpet, bamboo binoculars and some coconuts!
RM 1 every 4 to 6 months (appointment). It is a bargain! And yet, most don't take the opportunity.

Penulisan saudara bagus, menarik, memberi kesedaran.
ReplyDeleteCuma bahasa yang digunakan (english, medical jargons) tidak dapat difahami masyarakat umum seperti pak cik makcik di kampung.
Saya kira hanya doktor dan staff perubatan yang memahaminya.
(Syok sendiri?)
Alangkah baik jika rakyat 'biasa' boleh memahami sama..... mana tahu sama-sama kita semua boleh berubah.
Sekadar memberi pandangan.
Blog anda. Pilihan anda.
Terima kasih atas maklum balas s_eth and amirullamirhasnan. Maaf atas bahasa yang digunakan. Tetapi saya tidak dapat 'express myself' secara baik dalam Bahasa Malaysia. Saya akan usahakan di masa hadapan tetapi bukan dalam masa terdekat.

DeleteAs far as Western medicine, there are medicines that have very serious side effects.
ReplyDeleteI have always wondered why they are allowed on the market BEFORE the more serious side effects have been removed.
